Unreal Engine Pipeline TD

Under the supervision of the  Head of Production Technology, the Unreal Engine Pipeline TD will help to design and implement an exciting realtime workflow for our animated and VFX shows across the group. Through the implementation of a  realtime pipeline workflow, and the programming of dedicated tools in Unreal Engine (and/or other realtime technologies) with Python API, the incumbent must ensure our pipeline is supporting the new needs of the productions.

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the Unreal Lead Artist, Head of CG, Head of Production Technology and other members of the pipeline team, help designing an end to end realtime workflow that is integrated with Cinesite’s existing pipeline to support Feature Animation production using Unreal Engine
  • Develops tools and design workflows to seamlessly transfer data between  DCCs such as Maya and Houdini to/from Unreal
  • Implement and document parts of the realtime pipeline
  • Liaise with the global developers, TDs and infrastructure teams to adapt the tools in the global pipeline 
  • Develop and write tools within Unreal Engine that would interface with Cinesite’s existing pipeline
  • Develops engine tools to support production workflows such as previz and Layout
  • Leverages current technology, research, and development trends to innovate and advance the internal technologies and explore new realtime tech beyond UE, such as Omniverse
  • Designs, implements, and releases state-of-the-art components and applications for mission-critical, high performance, and globally distributed systems 
  • Writes technical briefs and user documentation 
  • Partners with production management to identify and schedule tickets and tasks
  • Provide technical support to Unreal artists during production including troubleshooting problems and performance optimisations
  • Test, document and develop workflow tools to flawlessly transfer data from 3D software to/from Unreal and evaluate the impact or value added to the pipeline
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and new technologies such as Omniverse
  • Participate in the development and optimization of the long-term toolset to be able to support a variety of workflows and increasingly complex production assets.
  • Work closely with other Pipeline TDs and Developers to ensure that standard work practices are followed, such as code review, Jira ticket evaluation and triage, etc.
  • Mentor new joiners and less experienced team members.
  • Liaise with Epic Games support teams for issues that cannot be addressed internally

Qualifications:

  • 4 years > experience in developing tools within Unreal Engine in the games or animation industry
  • Advanced proficiency in Python and C++
  • University degree in animation or gaming industry, Computer Science, Math, Physics or related field
  • Good understanding of the pipeline and workflow specific to the VFX and animation film industry.
  • Strong experience using Unreal for building, debugging and supporting complex setups and real-time rendering workflows.
  • Experience with motion/performance capture technologies would be a plus
  • Experience with source control and build systems in a Linux environment.
  • Knowledge of 3D animation software (Maya, Houdini), is a plus.
  • A proactive attitude and great team spirit are essentials.
  • Good communications skills, problem solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Experience in other realtime technologies such as Unity and Omniverse is a Plus.
