Food Process Engineer (Intermediate) – Lethbridge, AB

Responsibilities and Duties:

Reporting to the Director or Operations, the engineer will be responsible to support and lead the process engineering requirements for client projects.

  • Participate in client needs and project definition
  • Review Client Specifications
  • Lead all project phases and ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, defined scope, timelines and budget
  • Develop conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs, drawings and specifications
  • Review engineering deliverables, maintain high standards of quality and define project risks
  • Conduct work in accordance with Laporte Professional Practice Management Plan and guidelines
  • Write technical reports and analysis to support design submissions
  • Review shop drawings for compliance & participate in development of engineering standards
  • Obtain proposals from and follow-up with suppliers and contractors
  • Visit and survey project sites for project related activities
  • Management of deliverables and project execution (estimated 50% of workload)
  • Process, utilities and mechanical designs (estimated 50% of workload)
  • Work collaboratively as part of multi-disciplinary design teams located in offices across North America
  • Chair project team meetings
  • Maintain detailed understanding of local codes and standards applicable to industry and projects
  • Maintain a reference set of standards and in-house best practices
  • Suggest, contribute and champion initiatives to improve the firm’s operations and procedures
  • Positive support client and other discipline consultant interactions
  • Pursue opportunities for business development and future growth of the organization across various regions

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related fields
  • 3-10 years of progressive experience in the area of process design for the food, beverage or biotech industry
  • Experience in the design of fluid and bulk materials handling processes including preparation of process flow diagrams, heat and material balances and P&IDs
  • Experience in the design of sanitary process systems including piping, vessels and CIP systems
  • Familiarity with CFIA and HACCP requirements
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing an asset

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Provincial (P.Eng) or State (PE) designation or eligibility
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements
  • Strong leadership, relationship management, and organizational planning and project management skills, in addition to technical knowledge
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
  • Knowledge of post-implementation, continuous improvement efforts and methodology
  • Ability to influence clients, suppliers and peers into adopting «best practices» in the engineering field
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal, written, listening and interpersonal with the ability to transfer knowledge to others
  • Capability to engage and energize others to reach their fullest potential and performance
  • Versatility in disciplines other than the one academically trained for is highly desired
  • Proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Suite, Autocad, Revit
  • Flexibility to travel to manufacturing sites as needed
